Siquijor dads approve environment code as gov't urges people to preserve environment
April 23, 2009
Province of Siquijor (23 April) -- The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Siquijor finally approved the Siquijor Environment Code of 2009 after a series of public consultation conducted provincewide last month.
This came up amid growing local and international concern over the deterioration of environment and just in time with the country's week-long observance of environmental protection consciousness from April 19 to 25.
Earlier President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo sought more people' involvement and reminded public to be more conscious of the environment and should adopt ways to prevent its deterioration.
Among the ways Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita mentioned were proper waste disposal, river preservation and protection of waterways which are all contained in the Siquijor Environment Code.
"All facets of the environment are integrated in the code," Provincial Governor Orlando A. Fua said citing above others significant provisions on fishing and measures in relation to mining.
The approved environment code will be forwarded to the governor for his approval and signature, prior to implementation.
Too assure effective implementation of the code, Gov. Fua cited the creation of an Oversight Committee "to shadow the implementation of this code," he said.
He said the passage of this Environmental Code will put environment and tourism projects in place for the province.
Meanwhile, Malacanang, through the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the global warming and climate change and the 17 task groups under the Presidential Task Force on Climate Change, organized a weeklong observance to promote environmental protection consciousness from April 19 to 25.
Last Monday, the Office of the Press Secretary launched a mini-version of the President's carbon cutting coalition in Malacanang to encourage palace people to become examples of environmental champions.
Part of the week-long observance themed "Earth Survival, Climate Change Solutions" is the "Panata ng Bayan" (Vow of the Nation) to be held in Quezon City this Friday.
