LGUs warned vs. massive sand extraction

Illegal and massive extraction of marine sand all over the province of Siquijor was confirmed by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Region 7, after receiving reports that this has been going on under the very noses of local government units.
MGB-7 regional director Roger de Dios told a mining summit Thursday hosted by the province of Negros Oriental, that this remains a problem that could have a harmful effect on the tourism programs of the island-province.
De Dios said he already received negative feedback from foreign tourists about the effects of marine sand extraction to the beautiful white sandy beaches of Siquijor.
He added that his office has issued reminders to the governor about the problem, but thing boils down to the political will of concerned local government units.
It was suggested that LGUs source out their sand requirement from Negros Oriental or Bohol provinces, but this is a little costly for the contractors.
This developed as the central office of the MGB is conducting a study to determine the carrying capacity of the island with regards to marine sand extraction, as it also designated certain areas as marine reserves.
De Dios called on the LGUs concerned that if they are really interested in protecting their environment, they should now allow the extraction of marine sand in their areas.
He also asked them to focus on the main problem rather than anticipating to what will happen to proposed exploration of mineral resources in Siquijor.
